Field course in the Swiss Alps

A field course in Switzerland has been organized as a part of "Field Studies in Cryosphere". During the course, participants can directly experience field measurements in the Alps and also visit scientific research institutes in Switzerland.


Outline of the course

○ Objective:
  • to learn the method of the field measurement through the field course on the glacier.
  • to understand glacial- and periglacial environment through the observation.
  • to visit Swiss institutes to learn the state-of-the-art researches in the geoenvironmental study.

○ A course for who?
Students in Master/PhD course in Graduate School of Environmental Science

○ Number of participants
  ca. 10 to 15

○ Instructors of the course :
Dr. Shin Sugiyama, Dr. Yoshiyuki Ishii, Dr. Tetsuo Sueyoshi from Hokkaido University (Graduate School of Env. Science).
One or two lecturers from Swiss Federal Institute

  5/16〜19 Field course in Jungfraujoch
  5/19〜20 Field course in Gornergletscher
  5/21〜23 Data analysis and presentation / Special lectures
  5/24   Visit Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche
  5/25〜26 Davos --> Zurich --> Tokyo --> Sapporo

○ Main topics:
  • Field measurement on the Aletsch glacier
  • Visit the ongoing observation on Gorner glacier
  • Analysis of the obtained data and the presetnation
  • Special lectures from ETH researchers
